As the teacher, I will assist the students in defining the concept in their own words using the characteristics. The students will learn the characteristics of a concept, then the will use those characteristics to recognize examples of the concept. The Concept Model is a great method to help students to recognize the multiple characteristics of Feudalism. This lesson will give students a clear understanding of Feudalism, and then the lesson will test their comprehension of the concept through indentifying feudalism. This lesson was design to teach the Virginia Standard of Learning WHI. The themes of this lesson are viewing relationships between hierarchal classes, the spread of a concept through different cultures, and generally recognizing a concept. This lesson is for a World History class of ninth graders. The lack of a centralize government caused feudal societies to be attacked often, and the hierarchy created a lack in genuine loyalty to the king. Feudal relationships created a level of hierarchy in societies which the students will learn through the chart below. 2 Feudalism is a form of government that was used in various areas, and the concept is consistent throughout different countries/regions. The goal of this lesson is to break down the definition of feudalism, and evaluate how accurately the students can classify and recognize a feudal society. The textbook section would have provided the students with more than enough background knowledge to complete the worksheets. The students will have encountered some of the same terminology in this lesson as they did in the textbook. The class would have read Section 2 of Chapter 12(pgs. All of these aspects will create a comprehensive detailed definition of Feudalism, but not only will students know the definition they will have “some vivid examples of the concept that add flesh to a bare-bones definition.” 1 This lesson consists of an interpretation of a cartoon, completion of three worksheets, and the viewing of a clip from Disney’s Robin Hood. This lesson plan was designed to have students be able to recognize and identify characteristics of Feudalism.
